In case you would like to get a general idea how your child compared to the class as a whole, here are the class results for this week's spelling pretest of 5th Gr. high-frequency words. Class avg. was 82%.
If you were unable to attend Curriculum last night here is a link to the slide show ==> Curriculum Night. A copy of a flyer will be put in your child's mailbox today. The flyer has some information about Skyward, the district grade-book we are using this year.
To sign up for conferences I am using SignUp Genius this year. Conferences are scheduled for October 18th, 20th and 21st. Conference slots will be made on a first come, first served basis so try to have 2 or 3 slots in mind in case the one you prefer gets filled. When you sign up you'll be asked to enter your first and last name as well as your email address. In the comments area please type in your child's first name only. If you need to have a translator available, please let me know as soon as possible so that I may make those arrangements. I would prefer that students attend the conferences so that we may have an honest, open discussion about their goals. Conferences are scheduled for 20 minutes with 5 min. breaks between each conference. For the sake of all, I ask that you plan to be on time. If you are unable to attend during your scheduled time please call or email to let me know so that I can reschedule your conference. Thank you. I look forward to meeting with you and your child. To kick off the launching of our Writer's Notebooks we watched part of this video, Celebrate What's Right With the World. We watched this as a staff some years ago but I like to watch it every year. Some of the best quotes from this are, "I used to have to see it to believe it, now I have to believe it so see it.", "Vision controls our perceptions and our perceptions become our reality.", "Being the best for the world versus being the best in the world."
We started the Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA) this week in 4th grade. This week we began with the English Language Arts (ELA) portion. The students seem very focused and are working hard to show what they know. We will start the Math portion on May 23rd.
I realize that all of the students took the SBA last year in 3rd grade but here is a link to some general information about the test ==> SBA. During the test my role is that of a test administrator and proctor. I am not allowed to give feedback, view their test or answer questions. I have a script which must be strictly followed in order to preserve the test's reliability and validity. I am able to monitor their progress from a "dashboard' on my computer since the test is administered electronically.
We will have our Winter Party this Friday during our normally scheduled lunch time. I will post the list of items below. I have also posted the SAFE snack list from the school nurse for those that wish to donate items for our party.
