Autumn Stars and Planets
How the Leaves Came Down by Susan Coolidge
"I'll tell you how the leaves came down,"
The great tree to his children said,
"You're getting sleepy, Yellow and Brown,
Yes, very sleepy, little Red.
It is quite time to go to bed."
"Ah!" begged each silly, pouting leaf,
"Let us a little longer stay;
Dear Father Tree, behold our grief;
Tis such a very pleasant day
We do not want to go away."
So, for just one more merry day
To the great tree the leaflets clung,
Frolicked and danced, and had their way,
Upon the autumn breezes swung,
Whispering all their sports among,--
"Perhaps the great tree will forget,
And let us stay until the spring,
If we all beg, and coax, and fret."
But the great tree did no such thing;
He smiled to hear their whispering.
"Come, children, all to bed," he cried;
And ere the leaves could urge their prayer,
He shook his head, and far and wide,
Fluttering and rustling everywhere,
Down sped the leaflets through the air.
I saw them; on the ground they lay,
Golden and red, a huddled swarm,
Waiting till one from far away,
White bedclothes heaped upon her arm,
Should come to wrap them safe and warm.
The great bare tree looked down and smiled,
"Good-night, dear little leaves," he said.
And from below each sleepy child
Replied, "Good-night," and murmured,
"It is so nice to go to bed!"

Tell Me a Little about yourself
Welcome to the 2015-16 school year at Fisher’s Landing in Room 205 as a 4th Grade learner.
I hope you had a wonderful summer vacation. Even though I have been teaching 4th grade for sixteen years, every year I am excited to start the new year with a new group of learners.
I am looking forward to this school year and I am eager to work with you in ways that increase your learning. During the first few weeks of school, we will concentrate on developing work habits for independent and group work. In addition, we will focus on classroom expectations and procedures. I feel this is time well spent in order to create the focused, peaceful and nurturing climate that is essential for learning to take place.
Keywords this year- what really matters: respect, learning, safety, listening, getting better, mindset, challenge, confidence, motivation, effort, responsibility, initiative, perseverance, caring, teamwork, common sense, problem solving, and consequences.
Just to let you know a little bit about myself; this is my 20th year of teaching and my 17th year at Fisher’s Landing Elementary. I was born and grew up in Portland, OR where I still live. My wife also teaches 4th grade. I have a son and a daughter.
Please be patient with me, yourself and others as we ease into this new school year. I will be spending the first weeks getting to know each and every one of you. We will be spending time building a classroom community and learning to work together as a team. This begins with establishing how we want our class to look and feel. We will be setting the foundation of rules, expectations and routines for the entire year. It will help ensure confidence, encourage support for one another, and create an environment where all will feel safe to take risks and grow.
I’m looking forward to having a fantastic year!

Dear Learners,
Today I learned what it means to matter. I know it sounds silly, but it’s a powerful message. Two simple words – You Matter.
So many times we go about our daily lives and no one stops to thank us. No one seems to care if we go the extra mile. It’s odd really that we would find it odd for someone to tell us that we matter – because it’s such a simple thing to do.
So, I’m doing it right now – I want you to know that you matter to me. YOU are why I became a teacher. YOU will make a difference in my life. I hope to learn as much from YOU as you do from ME!
I want you to understand this: YOU MATTER to your family, YOU MATTER to your friends, YOU MATTER to so many people – You already matter to ME! Stop right now and think about who matters to YOU. (Most likely you matter to them too!)
So here’s your first assignment. Tell as many people in your life that THEY matter to YOU and, of course, tell them why. (Don’t just run up to strangers yelling, “You matter!” You might get a lot of confused looks!) Please take this seriously. It may be just one of the most important assignments you complete all year.
I hope you enjoyed your summer vacation, because the ride you’re about to embark on will be full of ups and downs and winding curves. One thing you will learn about me is that I hate roller coasters – but I can’t wait for the ride to begin that we will experience together!
I look forward to telling you in person how much you MATTER to me.
Mr. Biornstad
